The Office is seeking an Assistant State’s Attorney to become the Conviction Integrity Program prosecutor within the Conviction Integrity Unit–Circuit Court Division, 9th Floor 120 E. Baltimore Street.

The ASA will lead a dedicated investigator and law clerk in reviewing claims of factual innocence and wrongful conviction submitted out of court, directly to the State’s Attorney’s Office. The ASA will assist on all aspects of strengthening the conviction integrity program which will include working on relevant legislative matters, traveling to conferences, and conferring with conviction review prosecutors nationwide.

Duties of the ASA include directing the screening and initial review of all cases submitted and identifying those cases which are candidates for re-investigation. Cases identified for re-investigation may include traveling off site for witness interviews, crime scene evaluations, identifying evidentiary forensic testing needs, and working with external agencies to gather documents. The ASA will attend regular status meetings and attend case presentations by defense counsel. The ASA will participate in off-site trainings, conferences, legislative and related developmental opportunities in furtherance of the development and expansion of the conviction integrity program. The ASA will also handle writ of actual innocence petitions filed in court.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, innovative and have the ability to work collaboratively. The candidate will have a demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment.

The candidate must be organized and computer literate including being proficient in or the ability to become proficient in the use of Lexis Nexis to conduct legal research, conduct internet searches, and to maintain case notes and documents in an electronic form. The candidate must be familiar with or readily able to become familiar with relevant post trial statutes and case law.

Felony victim jury trial experience to verdict is required. Prior homicide trial experience is preferred, but not required.
