Case Backlogs
A national initiative, funded by Stand Together Trust, that mapped the true scale of case backlogs in prosecutors’ offices—and put the practices that reduce them into working hands.
About the program
The Case Backlogs program was a national initiative funded by Stand Together Trust to help prosecutors address delays in case processing. It provided insight into the scale of backlogs across jurisdictions and elevated the strategies that measurably reduce them. APA led the effort—delivering training, technical assistance, and a standing library of case backlog resources.
Offices applied for support through a formal request for proposals, and APA kept the door open throughout: any office could request a peer-to-peer exchange or pull materials at any time. That flexibility is what let offices of very different sizes improve efficiency on their own timelines.

Pilot sites and collaboration
Five pilot sites participated and served as models for other jurisdictions, working closely with APA to test and refine backlog reduction strategies. Their experience shaped the program’s recommendations and the shared knowledge base other offices now draw on.

Impact & next steps
The program supported collaboration and practical solutions to one of the justice system’s most persistent challenges. It helped offices work more effectively and helped ensure people are treated fairly—without waiting years for resolution.
