Case Backlog Resources

These case backlog resources from the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA) are designed to help prosecutors manage growing caseloads and improve operational efficiency. This page offers access to tools, training, and data that support backlog reduction efforts across jurisdictions.

APA’s case backlog resources include staffing survey reports, webinar recordings, and guidance on diversion programs and integrity units, to name a few. These materials are part of APA’s broader commitment to supporting prosecutorial offices through technical assistance and peer-to-peer collaboration.

Staffing Survey

In 2021, researchers at Lafayette College, in collaboration with the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA), released a study reporting findings from a survey of the nation’s largest prosecutors’ offices. The survey measured staffing, compensation, allocation of staff time across different programmatic offerings as well as the impact of COVID-19 on office operations. This report provides new evidence on prosecutor office staffing and compensation and is one of the first assessments of how prosecutors’ offices allocate staff resources to casework as well as other programmatic offerings such as prosecutor-led diversion or conviction integrity units.
