Florida Man Found Guilty of Murder In Loud Music Killing
10/02/14
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If Michael Dunn truly shot and killed Jordan Davis in self-defense, would he have returned to his Jacksonville hotel that night — and driven 2 1/2 hours back home to South Patrick Shores the next morning — without calling 911?

No, said State Attorney Angela Corey. Her prosecution team strategically attacked Dunn's alibi as "a ridiculous story" during his murder retrial this week at the Duval County Courthouse, contending that "flight to avoid prosecution is a strong indicator of guilt." www.usatoday.com

Hamilton County Tennessee District Attorney Establishes Cold Case Unit

Cold cases in Hamilton County will now be reopened. Beginning Wednesday, the District Attorney's office will partner with several local municipalities and the TBI to solve dozens of cold cases in Hamilton County. It's a project the DA says has been one year in the making.

"With the ability for an increase in technology, like DNA and fingerprints, the time now is to start reviewing those," says Hamilton county DA, Neal Pinkston. www.newschannel9.com

Animal Abuse Gains Traction as Serious Crime
9/30/14
The video lasts all of 12 seconds: A stray cat — after being lured by a young man’s outstretched hand — is suddenly and violently kicked, its body propelled through the air, clearing a small fence and landing about 20 feet away, to a chorus of cackling laughter. The man, Andre Robinson, was soon arrested.Had it been a person he kicked, Mr. Robinson, 22, most likely would have received a quick plea bargain requiring no jail time — if, that is, he had even been arrested.

But now, every time Mr. Robinson has appeared in court in Brooklyn, animal-rights activists have surrounded him, attending his hearings and calling for a jail sentence. He has not even received a plea offer from prosecutors, which is extremely rare in misdemeanor cases. www.nytimes.com
