Welcome to the latest edition of Lex Quod Ordo (Law and Order), APA’s quarterly newsletter dedicated to high performance prosecution. This fall has been a busy and productive time at APA, and we look forward to sharing with you our recent projects and successes. Most recently, APA, in partnership with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the Center for Court Innovation (CCI), hosted the 9th National Prosecution Summit in Dallas, Texas on September 22- 24.

Busted: 9 Plead Guilty In Largest Cockfighting Sting In New York History
12/22/14
NEW YORK – Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced the felony convictions of two Ulster County men charged as part of the three-county takedown, “Operation Angry Birds,” which resulted in the dismantling of the largest known cockfighting ring in New York history, reaching from Ulster County to Brooklyn and Queens, and one of the biggest in the country.

Madrigal was sentenced to 53 years to life for attempted murder. It took three years before he found an attorney willing to appeal, three more years before they could convince a judge that Madrigal's original attorney defended him ineffectively.

Madrigal walked out of Chino State Prison on Oct. 6, 2009, with the clothes on his back and $187. He was free to return to the life he'd left behind nine years earlier.

Middlesex Massachusetts District Attorney Launches Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Campaign
12/19/14
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced a new county-wide Safe Sleep Awareness Campaign to reduce Sudden Unexpected Infant Death at Winchester Hospital on Dec. 11.

In attendance were nearly 100 community partners from the fields of law enforcement, healthcare, social services and child welfare.
