A newly established Veterans' Court in Shelby County will help veterans navigate the criminal justice system if they find themselves facing charges. "I think it's the least we can do for people who have worn the uniform and made that commitment that they've made to serve the country," said Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell. "Many of them are suffering repercussions from that experience. The least that we can do as a society is to try to help them put their lives back together where it has fallen apart as a result of some of the stresses they've endured." The court will provide a comprehensive approach that begins at jail intake and proceeds with a mentor and services the Department of Veterans Affairs can provide. The county will spend about $60,000 a year for one new full-time position to operate the program, Luttrell said.
