New courthouse dog providing support for Montgomery victims
7/29/14
MONTGOMERY CO., AL (WSFA) - A new staff member in the criminal justice system in Montgomery County is proving to be a huge asset in investigations and in the courtroom, helping victims open up about what happened to them.   Her name is Willow and her is a two-year-old Labrador/Retriever mix. She was bred and raised by Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization that trains and provides assistance dogs. Her skills and disposition have made the professionally trained facility dog the perfect fit to work with victims at the One Place Family Justice Center- a victim advocacy center in Montgomery.  "There's a lot of research out there now dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and dealing with crime victims that pets and animals get them to start talking, get them to start engaging again and that's why she's such an important part of the Family Justice Center," said Steve Searcy, the center's executive director.

Prosecutor: drug trade leaves many victims behind
7/29/14
BLOOMINGTON — Jeff Horve has heard a lot of stories in his two decades as a prosecutor with the McLean County state's attorney's office, most of them with sad endings.  As the supervisor of the county's drug/gang unit, Horve oversees the prosecution of about 400 drug cases a year. He's also handled serious felony cases involving deaths.  The notion that drug crimes are victimless is a misconception, said the 49-year-old assistant state's attorney.  "They have to fuel their habits by selling drugs and stealing from others. It brings down an entire segment of the community," said Horve.  Of particular concern recently to Horve and local law enforcement is the spike in the amount of heroin coming into McLean County.

BRAVE unit teams up for community outreach walk
7/28/14
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - BRAVE unit members went door-to-door on foot in North Baton Rouge Saturday morning to connect with the community.  About 20 people affiliated with the BRAVE project - made up of members of the Baton Rouge Police Department, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office - walked through neighborhoods in the 70805 zip code, introducing themselves to residents and explaining that BRAVE is much more than a traditional law enforcement task force.  They went door to door in to let people know they're there and that they care. Project leader, Sgt. Herbert Anny, said this is a valuable tool in the fight against crime and much needed because of a growing misconception.
