September's Webinar: 48 Years of Miranda in about 48 Minutes
Please join us for September’s webinar, “48 Years of Miranda in about 48 Minutes”, to be held on Friday, September 26 from 3:00-4:00 PM (EDT). Presented by Deputy District Attorney Russell Moore of the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, the webinar will review critical aspects of the Miranda doctrine that are essential to the successful prosecution of criminal cases, including: when Miranda is needed, what constitutes “custody”  and “interrogation” for purposes of Miranda, express and implied waivers, and the distinction between “right to silence” and “right to counsel” under Miranda. The webinar will also discuss exceptions to the doctrine, as well as the remedy for a Miranda violation. APA is seeking one credit of Continuing Legal Education credit from the State of Virginia for this webinar and can help attorney attendee qualify this webinar for CLE credit in their own jurisdictions. Father and Son Become First to Simultaneously Hold DA Offices
Like many sons, Chris Boring wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. But he never imagined doing so would be a one-of-a-kind achievement in Oklahoma. Beginning in January, Mike Boring, 64, and Chris Boring, 34, will be the only father-son duo to ever simultaneously hold district attorney positions in Oklahoma. www.newsok.com
Texas Prosecutor Outlines Adrian Peterson Case
Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson used physical discipline on his son that was considered "not reasonable" by Texas community standards, a Texas prosecutor said Saturday.Based on the evidence from the incident in May, a grand jury in Montgomery County, Texas, indicted Peterson this week on a charge of injury to a child. Peterson turned himself in early Saturday morning and posted a $15,000 bond. www.usatoday.com
Nassau Country District Attorney Suggests Mandatory Kill Switch for Text-and-Drive Offenders
Texting while driving is illegal in 44 states, yet there are more than a million cellphone-related car accidents each year, according to the National Safety Council. To combat this grave ever-growing problem, one Long Island official proposed a five-point plan that includes activation of software that will automatically shutdown violators’ phones as they begin to drive. Nassau Country District Attorney Kathleen Rice recommended the county sentencing court mandate the use of such software in any case involving a texting violation. www.longisland.com
